Harry Potter Wand

Harry Potter Wand

As you may know Jude has started Bolton University studying a degree in Visual & Special effect for film and television. His project last semester was to design and make a wand that would not look out of place in the world of Harry Potter. Jude’s wand was designed for twins thrust into Hogwarts from a traditional Chinese aristocrat family. The male twin being the villainous Slytherin character and the female, an innocent Hufflepuff. The two wands both born from the same plum tree that had been struck with a curse during a duel, they join together to make one wand. The Hufflepuff wand is simple and straight with a Unicorn hair core, the Slytherin wand a burnt twisted spiral seeping with amber and has a core from a Chinese Fireball Dragon, together they make a very powerful and well balanced wand. Sculpted from clay, moulded and cast in resin, then hand-painted. Jude also made the box using grey board, lizard skin paper and printed decorative labels. The inner is sculpted from foam and lined with silk. At the end of the box is a small Chinese Dragon handle. It looks great in our display cabinet.

Back in the day

Recently we received this photograph from a friend of a friend. This was taken at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2007 in London. This is pretty much where Clothears Costumes started. Lee Clues (Obi Wan), Rebecca Clues (Luminara), Jude (Anakin) and myself (Shaak Ti) all decided to create a band of Jedi and attend the event in costume. It was amazing, an event we will never forget, especially the lightsaber fight on the bridge over the river Thames. Clothears was established in 2006 and this event was our first big showcase. We loved every minute of it and it completely inspired us to go on and make other costumes. Looking back at the photograph now we cringe, like family photos of the past, the horror of the ridiculous hairstyles. Hope you enjoy. No comments please ;-)

Thank you for the photograph and the happy memories.

Back to school

Today I proudly packed Jude off with his sandwiches and apple for his first day at big school. Today was his first proper day at Bolton University studying a BDes (hons) course in Special Effects for Film & TV. A three year degree course learning everything there is to learn about special effects make up, prop making and visual effects for film and tv.

We met with some of the course tutors back at Manchester Comic Com where they had a stall advertising the course. We quickly signed Jude up for the open day and visited the college and took a tour of the facilities and met the staff. The course is fantastic, their portfolio is to die for. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and being a small university it was very welcoming. From being a small boy and setting up his first special effects studio with a friend in an old coal shed, Jude’s love for everything special effects has long been a passion. Unfortunately back in the day when we were at college, courses like this were not available. I am glad he now has the opportunity. Fortunately Jude will still be working on costumes when he is not studying and together we hope to develop our portfolio.

Cosplay World

We now have in our possession a new book called Cosplay World. We were very excited to received this book, in fact we ordered two copies, one for the coffee table and one to remain unopened as a keepsake. We are very proud to have two of our costumes published. Julian Checkley, a good friend and fellow cosplayer was contacted by the authors and asked to produce a short piece about himself and his cosplay history. Jules managed to get a great six page spread showing his collection of costumes. Amongst the costumes shown are Star Wars – Savage Opress and Dark Knight Rises – Bane which we assisted with.  The Savage costume shows off our soft parts and leather armour whilst the Jules flex’s his muscles in our Bane vest. The other parts Jules made himself or sourced from from other costume/prop makers. Other costumes in the artical are Tarful, a young Vader and Darth Malgus, a masterpiece of a costume. We would expect nothing less from such a genius prop maker. Well done mate, hope your proud.

Purchase the book for yourself and check out the other iconic costumes that are on show.

The Empire Strips Back

This was an exciting contact for us. Russall from ‘The Empire Strips Back’ Burlesque production over in Australia contacted to us to see if he could commission a few items for the 2014 tour of the show. Due to time restraints we supplied Russall and his team with a Boushh helmet kit that they made up magnificently, Boushh armour, com link and a hand painted Luke Skywalker rank bar. Russall has kindly sent us a link to the video which he had made to advertise the new show. If this ever comes to the UK we will be there watching, looks like great fun.

Clothears New Building Day 11, 12 & 13

This weekend brought terrible weather all weekend, typical as it was time to work on the roof. The guys battled through the wind, rain and hailstone and almost completed it. Just the finishing touches left to do and we’re ready to decorate.

Clothears New Building Days 3,4 & 5

Day 3 of our build was spent with the floor insulation and boards being put down.

Day 4 saw the floor completed and then the walls flew up in no time, followed quickly by the roof joists. Then all the wall panels went into place and it was really beginning to look like a building.

Day 5. The roof insulation was fitted and then covered with the membrane, ready for the slates. Paul the electrician was on site today and started fitting the cables for the electrics. The walls were then insulated and covered with membrane ready for the outer cladding.

It’s really exciting to actually see a structure, can’t wait to see it complete.
